About Fulbright:
Established in 1946 by Senator J.William Fulbright, the Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s most prestigious international educational exchange program designed to promote “mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries around the world.” The Fulbright Program includes a number of different exchange programs for students, academics and professionals in order to conduct a variety of different educational activities.

The Traditional Fulbright Scholarship Program was established worldwide in 1946 and in Cyprus in 1962. The Fulbright Scholarship Program is a world renowned, merit-based scholarship program that aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills. The title of ‘Fulbright Scholar’ carries tremendous prestige that continues to open doors for a lifetime. Fulbright scholars have been extraordinarily active and successful in the world: 39 have won Nobel prizes; 60 have won Pulitzer prizes; 22 have received MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Awards; 14 have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the U.S. highest honor. The ranks of past Fulbright Scholars, internationally, include former United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the European Union High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, economist Milton Friedman, author John Updike and musician Aaron Copeland. In Cyprus, Cypriot alumni include leading personalities in the political, social, cultural, economic and scientific life of the island.
Eligibility Criteria:
In order to be eligible, applicants must fulfill all of the following requirements:
Citizenship
1. Cypriot citizenship:Applicants selected must have a Cypriot passport (they will have to travel to the U.S. with a Cypriot passport).
2. Must not be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
3. Have one parent who was born in Cyprus.
4. Must have at least 3 years of secondary (lyceum) education in Cyprus.
Age
Not be over 45 years of age on September 1, 2010.
Amount of Award:
Fulbright Scholarship grantees will be awarded a maximum amount of $25,000 per year for two years if warranted by university studies (a maximum total of $50,000). All scholarship grantees are expected to apply for financial assistance directly from the U.S. institutions, in addition to receiving the Fulbright scholarship.
Deadline:
The Cyprus Fulbright Commission will be accepting applications between early May and July 30, 2010. . Applications must be typed. All completed applications must be delivered in person by the applicant or his/her representative to a counselor at the Fulbright Commission who will review the application for complete documents. All applicants must be present in Cyprus for an interview in September 2010.
Note:
The Fulbright competition is open for Master’s degrees in all fields except Medicine and Dentistry. Grants are for study at accredited U.S. universities beginning in the 2011-2012 academic year. Travel costs are not included in the grants.
